Fluctuating Cholesterol, Triglyceride Levels Linked to Dementia

Cholesterol and triglyceride levels that regularly rise and fall may increase the risk of dementia, according to a new study. Overall, those with the highest cholesterol variability had a 19% increased risk of dementia, and those with the highest triglyceride variability had a 23% increased risk.

This study comes after previous research has shown mixed results on whether high cholesterol, specifically, is linked to dementia. It included over 11,500 adult participants with an average age of 71 and had a followup period that lasted for an average of 12.9 years.

Overall, researchers found that fluctuations in total cholesterol (and triglycerides) were linked to a higher dementia risk but not variations in LDL or HDL cholesterol levels. Those with the highest amount of variability also had the highest risk.

Though more research is needed, this study suggests that cholesterol and triglyceride stability are important for protecting brain health. Both are linked to body weight and other lifestyle factors with diet and lifestyle changes being a primary means of improvement.

Popular Flower Has Anti-Diabetic Properties, Improves Insulin Function

An extract from dahlia flowers (Dahlia pinnata) may be beneficial for those with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, some new research has found. The extract contains a compound known as butein, which has been previously studied for its ability to improve blood sugar levels.

Along with butein, researchers also pinpointed two other compounds— sulfuretin and isoliquiritigenin (both closely related to butein)— that together appear to lower brain inflammation, improve insulin function, and aid blood sugar control.

After testing the effectiveness of the dahlia extract in animal studies, the researchers used a clinical trial to confirm its efficacy in humans with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. Overall, it was found to significantly improve blood sugar regulation for participants.

The study authors plan to translate their findings into a readily available extract in tablet form. Further research into the potential of dahlias for protecting brain function may also be on the table, since it displayed an ability to lower neuroinflammation.

8 Amazing Benefits of Chlorella— Nature’s Top Detoxifier

Chlorella is a type of green algae that has long been valued in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. It contains more nutrients than most vegetables and is a rare plant-based source of vitamin B12. Chlorella is also one of the best natural detoxifiers and has been shown to help get rid of heavy metals, plastic chemicals, and dioxin. If that weren’t enough, studies show that chlorella can boost longevity, protect heart health, and lower chronic inflammation. (More)

Heat Waves May Double Risk of Fatal Heart Attacks

Weather extremes put a lot of stress on your body. Hot weather— which many people are dealing with lately— is especially challenging for the heart and can increase the risk of a heart attack by about 18%. When a heat wave is combined with air pollution, heart attack risk is almost doubled, and older adults are in the most danger. Staying indoors during the hottest temperatures and using an indoor air purifier are both strategies for protecting your heart. (More)

What is Greenwashing? + Top Ways You Can Avoid It

Greenwashing happens when companies advertise themselves or their products as being eco-friendly or natural when they aren’t. This practice is, unfortunately, on the rise as more consumers seek natural options. Tactics include misleading images (like nature pictures on a synthetic product), buzzwords (“green”, “nontoxic”, etc.) that aren’t backed up, and even outright lies. The best way to avoid greenwashing is to ignore all marketing terms, always read the label, and do your research on the company before buying. (More)

Birth Control Pills Negatively Alter Stress Response in Women

Despite being in use since the 1960s, researchers still don’t understand all the effects of birth control pills. However, a new study has found that one unintentional effect is a negative impact on normal stress response in women. More specifically, women in the study who were not taking birth control pills experienced a drop in stress hormones after taking part in a relaxing activity. Those who were on birth control did not have any drop in stress hormones after the same activity, suggesting that their stress levels may stay consistently elevated. (More)

Top 8 Healthiest Berries You Can Eat

If you want a healthier diet, eat more berries. These small, popular fruits are packed full of fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, and numerous other nutrients. Blueberries, the “original” superfood, are a great choice and may lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes. Other top choices include raspberries (excellent fiber content), goji berries (beneficial for vision), and acai (great antioxidant content). You can’t go wrong with the humble strawberry, either, or cranberries, which help fend off UTIs. (More)
